4 Easy DIY Denim Distressing Hacks

Straight from the runways, distressed jeans are an easy way to update your street style. Play fashion designer for a day and dial up your basic jeans with these easy DIY denim distressing tricks. —Jeanine Gordon

chop, chop. Inspo: Agolde. Gone are the days of taking your too-long jeans to the tailor—just cut the bottoms off at home instead. Choose your ideal length (try cropped for summer) and don’t be afraid of making them uneven or jagged. Throwing them in the wash a couple times will help speed up the natural fraying process for an un-done look that’s totally on trend.

take to the kitchen. Inspo: Old Navy. Nothing is better than perfectly worn in jeans and it’s easy to make your own. Get in the kitchen and grab a fine grater or lemon zester to rough up your denim. Start slowly—you can always add more distressing and holes as needed. For the most flattering placement of your threadbare patches, work near the front pockets and around the knees.

get artsy. Inspo: DSquared2. A smattering of paint can elevate bland denim to next-level chic. Take a trip to the hardware or art store for paint in the colour of your choice. Lay down a plastic sheet and drizzle, drip, or splatter until you achieve the perfect results.

patch it up. Inspo: Free People. Patchwork denim is having a moment right now, so it’s a great time to give a pair of boring jeans a makeover. Do a closet cleanout to find some old denim that you no longer wear and cut out a few different sized patches. Hand sew or use fabric glue to apply to your jeans, layering them a little for an undeniably cool, casual look.
