Make Your Home Smell So Good With HEIM Goods (Win!)

February 14, 2021

New Vancouver-based based HEIM Goods creates sustainable and handmade products that will make your home a sanctuary. We chatted with founders Parker McMullin and Matt Osborn to learn more about their seriously magic-making room and linen mists. —Vicki Duong

Hi Parker and Matt! Please tell us a bit about your brand to start.

Parker: Our brand is called HEIM Goods (pronounced HYME) and we’re a Vancouver-based housewares brand that provides small-batch handmade room and linen mists. We just launched in January with our debut collection of scents: Wild West, The Forest and Moon Bloom. We make all of our products by hand ourselves, from the blends to the labelling, and it’s been such a rewarding project so far!

Matt: Each mist is sustainably packaged in a chic matte-glass bottle, as a means to reduce plastic in our production. We are also very proud to source all of our ingredients and materials from North America, and mostly from Canada.

How did the process of starting a business together come to fruition?

Parker: Like many new brands, the pandemic played a big part in us creating a business together since we, you know, had a bit more free time on our hands.

Matt: We started to project as a creative outlet for ourselves after moving into our first apartment together. We had so much fun decorating and designing our apartment together to make it a home, that we just kept working together. We both love branding, design, and home goods and décor, so it worked out well that we ended up creating something that reflects all of that.

What inspired your scents for your debut product, home and linen mists?

Parker: All three of the scents are so unique and special in their own way. The forest is inspired by our love of the outdoors, especially throughout B.C. Whenever we come back from a visit to Salt Spring or Bowen Island (pre-COVID, of course), we always miss the smell of the woods—so we decided, why not make it into a scent for home?!

Matt: We knew that we wanted a warm, musky scent in the collection since those are the scents Parker and I usually gravitate toward, so Wild West is a blend that is very inspired by us! It combines so many of our favourite oils and even though it took a lot of trial and error to finalize, it was definitely worth it. The branding of the product itself, however, was definitely just inspired by hot cowboys!

Parker: Moon Bloom is a dreamy take on a classic. My mom used to sprinkle lavender on my pillows whenever I wasn’t feeling good to help me relax, so I definitely wanted a lavender-focused spray in the collection since it reminds me of such calm energy. The addition of the rose essence makes the scent very unique, luxurious and almost creamy, which I’ve never smelled in any other lavender spray.

Tell us more about your ethos of creating an atmosphere of comfort at home?

Parker: Fun fact: HEIM means home! We believe that every home is a sanctuary and should make you feel comforted, safe and cosy. The way your room smells definitely adds to that aura, very much like a candle does.

Matt: We definitely enjoy the process of developing a space into something with character and comfort. That being said, we recognize that we have been so fortunate to be in a place and time that allows us to live together openly and create a place to call home. This ties into our desire to also give back to the LGBTQ2S+ community who are in need most. We donate partial proceeds from every bottle sold to Covenant House to help in its mission to help homeless youth.

What products are you hoping to introduce in the future?

Parker: It’s hard to say! Right now, we’re having a great time learning more aromatherapy with our room and linen mists and can’t wait to create more of those. Maybe for spring/summer we will release a new scent, hint, hint!

Matt: We have a few products in the works, and are really excited to have them released soon. Where the brand will go in general is hard to say. We want to let it expand and grow organically and are open and willing to explore whatever comes our way.

It all depends. If I want to relax then lavender. If I have a headache the peppermint. If I am nauseous then licorice. If I have trouble breathing then eucalyptus. If I want something uplifting then a citrus. ♥️ IG @JohannaNewman88
