There’s a new high-quality home textiles brand in town, with a vision to make organic and ethically produced bed and bath linens more accessible. Launched in November 2021 and based in Vancouver, Homebird brings a fresh outlook to the industry, with complete traceability and transparency regarding its supply chain and organic and Fairtrade partnerships. We chatted with founders Saloni and Gaurav to learn more. —Vita Daily

Hi Saloni and Gaurav! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

Hi, we are Saloni and Gaurav, co-founders of Homebird. We’re originally from India, but have spent the last 15-plus years in the U.S. and Canada and now call Vancouver our home. Saloni has a background in textile production, and has worked with manufacturers from around the world. And Gaurav has had a long career in finance. This past year has been quite a whirlwind for us personally; not only did we have our first child, but we also decided to take the plunge into entrepreneurship, which is something both of us have always wanted to do.

When and why did you launch Homebird? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?

As we spent time at home over the past year, we decided to freshen up our linens. We searched long and hard for quality products that looked good and didn’t cost an arm and a leg. When we couldn’t find what we were looking for, we decided to start Homebird. Saloni’s background in textile production has made her intimately familiar with the harsh realities of the industry we all hear about, so we knew that a sustainable and ethical supply chain had to be the foundation for our business. We spent almost a year finding the right manufacturing partners and testing each one of our products, before we finally launched Homebird in November 2021. At Homebird, we have a simple mission: to deliver premium-quality bed and bath linens that look great, are responsibly made, and accessibly priced.

What products do you currently offer, and what makes them unique?

We offer a selection of bed and bath linens. Our bedding collection has two ranges: sateen and percale. To put it simply, sateen produces a buttery-soft fabric that is perfect for snuggling in while percale is a cool and crisp fabric that is ideal for warmer sleepers. In our bath collection, we offer two ranges as well: classic and plush. Classic is your go-to everyday towel: lightweight, absorbent and quick-to-dry. Plush is your luxury towel that will make your morning routine feel truly special. We also offer hair and makeup towels that come in some fun colours and designs and are great for everyday self-care. All of our products are made with 100 per cent certified organic cotton that is free from toxic chemicals and gentle on your skin. And we make each one of our products with the consumer in mind—from contemporary designs and on-trend colours, to the tiny details that make life just a little bit easier, we’ve thought of it all.

The linen space is currently, well, very cosy! If you haven’t told us already, what makes your brand different?

It certainly is! We started Homebird because we believe that consumers shouldn’t have to choose between quality, reasonable prices and sustainably and ethically made products. In a world where greenwashing has become increasingly common, we’ve chosen to give our customers an inside look into where and how our products are made so they can be more informed and feel confident about their purchase. All of our products are made from organic cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard, which is the highest standard when it comes to certifying organic fibres. And our products are made using Fairtrade-certified cotton as well. We’re incredibly proud to have partnered with Fairtrade and see the positive impact we’re able to make in the lives of the people who make our products. Our commitment to being transparent with our customers, and sustainable and ethical manufacturing practices is what makes us truly different as a brand.

Tell us, what’s currently on your bed?!

We’re currently using our sateen sheet set in white. It’s super-soft and incredibly cosy—perfect for this time of year. And for our duvet, we like to mix and match our colours every now and then, so are currently using our white and sand reversible duvet cover!
