Toronto’s Bata Shoe Museum Goes FUTURISTIC In New Exhibition

FUTURE NOW: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting Edge Kicks opens May 26 at the Bata Shoe Museum in downtown Toronto. Featuring futuristic footwear designs from the auto-lacing Nike MAG (think Marty McFly) to the virtual RTFKT x Staple Meta-Pigeon, FUTURE NOW explores how cutting-edge technologies, unexpected materials and new ideas are transforming footwear today.

Sneakerheads and footwear fans in general will appreciate this expertly curated exhibited that includes digitally designed and 3-D printed shoes, sneakers made from mushroom leather and reclaimed ocean plastics and footwear created for the metaverse. Divided into four areas, and designed by Arc+ Co Design collective, museum goers will travel through innovation, sustainability, transformation and the virtual world to experience the future now.

The exhibit showcases 50 futuristic designs from the museum’s own collection as well as loans from prominent collectors, designers and inventors. Notable brands and designers include Salehe Bembury, Steven Smith, Zaha Hadid, Nike ISPA, Tom Sachs, EKTO VR, Yeezy and many more. Additionally this opening also sees a FREE community weekend, sneaker drive and the unveiling of new prominent Bloor Street windows. —Lauren Walker-Lee
