What do Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber have in common? The Dyson Corrale hair straightener! Last month, they used the Corrale to create a variety of different styles—from curls and waves, to smooth and sleek. We chatted with Dyson’s global styling ambassador Matt Collins to learn how to create some of these summer celeb styles at home. —Noa Nichol
Hi Matt! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.
My name is Matthew Collins; I am a celebrity hairstylist and Dyson global styling ambassador. My work consists of styling hair for red carpets, award shows and press events for celebrities, which include Kristen Bell, Mandy Moore, Joey King, Kristen Stewart and more.
We hear that certain celebs love the Dyson Corrale hair straightener (we don’t blame them)! Can you spill the tea on who?!
Mandy Moore is a big fan! Most of our recent looks used the Dyson Corrale to create styles like an effortless “S” wave texture to give her a done but undone look. The Dyson straightener has flexing copper plates so you can get your desired style but with less heat, helping to maintain the health of your hair and get that shine. I also love it because it’s cord-free, so you’re never getting tangled while styling on set.
What types of styles are celebs using this tool to create this summer, and for what types of special occasions?
The best thing about the Dyson Corrale is the diversity of styles it can create. You can create soft voluminous waves, textured “cool girl” waves, and every texture between. You can also create a sleek straight look. All this while maintaining the health of your hair because with the Dyson, you can use a lower heat setting.
Last week, Hailey Bieber shared a GRWM video on TikTok where she showed how she achieves her beach waves with less heat using the Dyson Corrale hair straightener. Can you walk us through this process?
Start near the root and softly clamp the Dyson Corrale on a section of hair, then slowly twist 180 and softly open the plates and let rest for a second to let that movement cool. Then gently press again and twist the opposite direction 180, keep continuing this back-and-forth movement until you get to the ends. The pause helps the bend to be more pronounced, but if you want a more casual look, you can just continue to bend back and forth all the way down without the pause.
Beyond these two looks, can you give us a few of your favourite celeb hair tips and tricks in time for summer parties and get-togethers?
The main tip I can share to achieve any summer party or get-together, is finding the right base. If you are curling your hair the key to a lasting curl is the product base you use. So if your curls or styles fall out, don’t add any creams or oils before you curl, add those after for shine. Instead prep your hair using a volumizer spray, mousse or texture spray and use that to build up your look.
In the same vein, what’s trending for summer hair?
Soft voluminous waves are back, and big blowouts. Using your Dyson Airwrap you can get those soft bouncy rolling waves. We will also see lots of messy chignons with a base texture wave pattern – you can achieve this look with the Dyson Corrale. Put your hair in a mid-point then wrapped tightly into a bun but leaving the ends popping out for a more relaxed modern vibe. Even perhaps with a couple small pieces left out that frame the face around your part line.
