When it comes to fashion, everything old becomes new again with cyclical trend cycles. While we might not be ready to go back to the skinny Pamala Anderson brows, there are certain late 90s and early 2000s trends we’re excited to return to. Below are some of our faves with a modern twist we’ll be rocking this spring. —Vicki Duong
low-rise jeans. Hear us out, we get the apprehension to embrace low-rise jeans, but we have a solution for you. If you’re looking for a low-cut look without a low-cut fit, we’ve been loving these mini-waistband jeans ($148) from Levi’s that are a mid-rise but due to their unique cut it creates the illusion of low-rise jeans without the dreaded exposed thong.
butterfly clips. Nothing says Y2K like wearing butterfly hair clips. This holographic butterfly-shaped clip from Aldo Shoes ($10) with an iridescent swirl adds a retro touch to your next updo. Make this look modern by pairing it with a trend-driven messy bun.
charm hoop earrings. While hoops never go out of fashion, something about a dangling charm feels instantly nostalgic. We adore these daisy charm hoops ($100) from Vancouver’s own Lover’s Tempo. Not your mall accessory brand charms from decades past, these earrings are made of 14K gold over recycled sterling silver, an elevated upgrade from the 90’s previous plastic styles.
oversized puffers. Look, we’re not pleased about the lingering cold temps either, but if we’re braving the cold we want to stay warm while looking stylish. The it-coat of the season pays homage to 90s hip-hop with puffers once again in fashionista’s outerwear rotation. We’re loving the North Face 1996 Retro Nuptse ($400) for a two-tone design that updates a classic.
jelly bags. As Destiny’s Child said, I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly. Coach’s iconic Tabby bag ($430) gets a retro twist with this jelly version that feels like a Barbie doll’s purse made grown-up size. It comes with a shoulder and wristlet strap, this square handbag is an attention grabber in any decade.
