Buttercream founder Candice Munro is dedicated to producing high-quality clothing that is both stylish and sustainable, and the brand’s ethos centres around the importance of slower prodution schedules, fair wages, lower carbon footprints and respect for the environment. Buttercream Clothing has already amassed over 100,000 social media followers across all of its platforms, and is all about building a community of like-minded individuals who care about slow fashion and want to look great while doing it (case in point: our own gorgeous contributor, Jen Pistor!). Hi Candice! It’s great to be able to chat with you. Can you tell us a bit about yourself to start?
Hi there! It’s wonderful to chat with you as well. I’m Candice, the founder of Buttercream Clothing. I’m a proud mom of four amazing kids. I initially started this business because I wanted to work from home and spend more time with my family. Sewing and clothing have always been passions of mine, so it was a natural fit for me to combine these two loves and create a business that allows me to be there for my children while pursuing my passion. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to share my love for ethically-made clothing with others.
When and why did you launch Buttercream Clothing? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?
I launched Buttercream Clothing nearly 10 years ago this June, and it’s been such an exciting journey since then. The primary reason behind starting the company was to create comfortable and functional clothing that caters to a variety of body types. By focusing on size inclusivity and offering a diverse range of styles, Buttercream Clothing aims to fill the niche of truly accessible and comfortable fashion for all and is working hard to offer more sizes in the future as we currently offer sizes xs-6x.
Locally made, size-inclusive, and ethically sourced … can you give us an overview of your brand ethos, how it was shaped, and why it is so important, given the current state of fashion?
Our brand ethos revolves around two key values: local production and size inclusivity. We focus on slow fashion to support our planet and people with a more sustainable option to fashion. By supporting local businesses and offering sizes from XS to 6X, we aim to create a sustainable and inclusive fashion experience for many with future plans to expand our sizing further.
For those who don’t know, what is the slow-fashion movement, where is it at in Canada and how is Buttercream Clothing helping to lead the cause?
The slow fashion movement emphasizes sustainability, ethical practices, and conscious consumption in the fashion industry. In Canada, this movement is growing, and we’re so honoured to be a part of it. We produce high-quality, locally-made clothing while supporting other Canadian businesses. Our commitment to slow fashion helps raise awareness and inspires change toward a more responsible fashion industry in Canada.
Can stylish and sustainable truly co-exist, when it comes to fashion?
Absolutely, stylish and sustainable fashion can co-exist. We focus on creating timeless pieces that are not driven by fast, disposable trends.
You do some men’s clothing, too! The offering, currently, is small, but will it expand? Do you think we have extra work to do on the men’s apparel side, when it comes to slow and sustainable fashion?
Yes, we do offer a small collection of men’s clothing. While our current offering is limited, we’re always open to the possibility of expanding it in the future. However, given the current economic climate, we’re focusing on maintaining our selections at a manageable size for now.
How do you, as a company, support other Canadian businesses and help create a sustainable fashion ecosystem in our own backyard?
One way I personally contribute is by mentoring a few businesses and offering business coaching. I also conduct workshops and am a big supporter of startups. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I hope to empower and inspire other entrepreneurs to create sustainable and ethical businesses that contribute positively to our local communities.
You work with some of our favourite influencers, like Jen! Who are some Canadian champions of your brand, and who (content creator wise) do you like to follow in terms of gaining more knowledge about slow, sustainable fashion?
We’re so glad to hear that you’re a fan of our collaborations with wonderful influencers like Jen Pistor! We’ve had the pleasure of working with several Canadian champions of our brand, including @aneesedzi, @thecurvycapsule, @curvy_chronicles, and we also love following @fashionrevolution for gaining more knowledge about slow and sustainable fashion. These content creators not only help spread the word about our brand but also share valuable insights and information on sustainable fashion practices. By following and engaging with these inspiring individuals, we can all learn more about how to make better choices when it comes to fashion and contribute to a more sustainable future together.

Oh, we’re definitely looking forward to the warm weather too! This summer, I’ll be rocking some fabulous Buttercream pieces that are perfect for the season. I love the Cuff dress, and so many other pieces. I especially appreciate Buttercream being size inclusive. I wear a 2x and it is difficult enough to find clothing that is attractive and not trashy.
