Sleepwear With Serious Sustainable Style (Win!)

Newly launched, Vancouver-based sleepwear brand SONS believes that comfort and conscience go hand-in-hand, offering high-quality 100 per cent cotton sleepwear while prioritizing sustainable and ethical production practices. We chatted with co-founders Tlell Wilson and Carly Jefferson, Canadian best friends and business partners, to learn more. —Vita Daily

Hi Tlell and Carly! Please tell us a bit about yourselves to start.

Hey! We’re BFFs and business partners who have been on this exciting entrepreneurial journey together for over two years now. Our first venture, & Sons Creative, a creative studio, has been flourishing during this time. We’ve had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with diverse clients helping them build, launch and grow their brands. The studio is our day job and the place where we discovered a great synergy between our complementary skill sets. Our shared passion for creating impactful brands and our ability to work seamlessly as a team fueled our desire to launch SONS. Tlell, our creative director, is a versatile designer who specializes in spaces, product design and branding. Drawing on her experience at Herschel Supply Co., Tlell’s creative vision shines through in every aspect of SONS’ new collection, ensuring a perfect blend of style and functionality. Carly is a seasoned brand builder and growth marketing expert with over a decade of experience in the startup space. She has a strategic mindset and deep knowledge of digital marketing, which allows her to connect SONS with a diverse audience and foster meaningful relationships in the digital landscape. With her strong background, she’s the driving force behind our brand’s growth. 

When and why did you launch SONS? What niche were/are you aiming to fill? (And, what does SONS stand for?)

SONS has been almost three years in the making but we started ramping up the process in June of 2022 and the brand officially launched on June 28, 2023. We saw a gap in the market for cute, well-made cotton pyjamas that are actually comfortable to sleep and lounge in. We wanted to provide a sleepwear option that combined style, comfort, and functionality. Additionally, we saw an opportunity to make a positive impact and help create better opportunities for women through our charity/giveback aspect. SONS is the last part of both of our last names (Jefferson and Wilson); we are the SOMS!

What products do you currently offer, and what makes them unique?

We offer three different styles of sleep sets: a long sleeve/pant set, a short sleeve/short set and a lace cami/short set, as well as box-hers (to go with your favourite old sleep tee), eye masks, scrunchies, and a tote. All our PJs are 100 per cent cotton and are a modern take on a classic pyjama silhouette. We wanted the material to feel like getting into crisp fresh sheets without feeling restrictive or bunchy. We also wanted to make styles that could be worn comfortably all morning without feeling unkempt.

What makes cotton (100 per cent, at that) the perfect choice for sleepwear?

Cotton naturally breathes, wicks away moisture, and adapts to your body’s needs, ensuring a cool and dry night’s sleep in any temperature. It’s gentle, hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin. Beyond its comfort, cotton is also known for its durability and never pills. In fact it gets softer with wear, ensuring that your SONS sleepwear will serve you for years to come.

Tell us about your brand’s awesome give-back element!

Our commitment to a more positive future is rooted in our co-founder’s personal journey. Carly grew up in Uganda, and because of this personal connection, we’ve partnered with the local organization where proceeds from every purchase is donated to the Ride 4 a Woman in Bwindi, Uganda, a charitable organization set up to support women struggling with poverty, HIV and domestic violence. The organization also offers microfinance, helping women to help themselves and support their families, providing the women with skills, safety, income and education for their children. At SONS, we know that small actions can lead to big changes and we invite people to join us on our mission to create a more positive future, one pair of PJs at a time. By purchasing one set of SONS PJs you are paying a full day’s wage for three women.

Why would you say it’s great to be stylish for sleep?

Being stylish for sleep is a perk for sure, why not look great while you sleep! The idea was to create PJs that you don’t want to change out of right away once you wake up. Whether you’re greeting the UPS person, making your family breakfast or taking the dog for a quick walk around the block, we wanted to give you something that was appropriate for more than just your bedroom.
