10 Things To Do In Windsor This July

July 10, 2017

We’re taking a look at how to enjoy yourself in one of Canada’s southernmost cities this summer.

1. Check out the Dieppe Gardens and book yourself a tour. The gardens are named for the Essex-Kent Scottish Regiment of World War II soldiers who lost their lives at Dieppe, France, in a 1942 landing. They’re great for history fans and beautiful for a summer stroll.

2. Get your steak fix at The Keg Steakhouse & Bar. Enjoy a delicious upscale menu at this indoor/outdoor venue right on the Detroit River (and conveniently, right by the Dieppe Gardens).

3. If you like your architectural beauty and get a kick out of Canadian cities’ tendency to blend European and American styles, visit the Willistead Manor. It’s a 36-room mansion that actually makes for a pretty stunning tour (and a nice indoor attraction on a hot July day!).

4. Try your luck at Caesars Windsor. Online casinos may be the more convenient options nowadays, and they have a tendency to draw a lot of players away from in-person establishments. While online platforms have mini-games and special bonuses built into games, at Caesars Windsor you’ll rediscover the perks of a brick-and-mortar casino. The poker room has a range of offerings and the slot machines allow you to order drinks from where you sit! Throw in the usual restaurants and entertainment options at a Caesars establishment and you’ve got a fun summer destination.

5. Get your splash on at Adventure Bay. This is a family water park that’s naturally an appealing stop if you’re travelling with kids, or if it happens to be scorching hot outside. There are a lot of features and rides in the park, with the most interesting one being a slide that actually pushes you up before letting you slide back down.

6. Browse the Art Gallery of Windsor. Effectively the area’s top museum, this is actually a pretty stunning gallery. According to its own website, it’s home to approximately 4,000 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, with some stretching back as far as 300 years. It’s also home to the occasional traveling exhibition, so if you’re planning a trip to Windsor, you might want to take a look ahead at the schedule. The gallery is a great place to start a nice evening out. You can dress to impress, browse the collection and then be on your way to the aforementioned steakhouse or one of the city’s other great restaurants. Speaking of which …

7. Expand your palette at Mazaar. This is a relaxing, Lebanese-inspired restaurant (there are actually two locations) where you can enjoy some of the city’s best food. If you’re interested in seasoned meats, kebabs, and fresh vegetable dishes—as well as a small but delightful bar area—put it on your list!

8. Kayak to Peche Island. This is a pretty little island in the middle of the Detroit River that’s owned by the city of Windsor (though at one time it was the private residence of a 19th-century businessman). The businessman’s home is still there (in ruins), and you can explore the home in addition to beaches, walking trails, and swimming areas at your leisure. Supposedly, the island is only a 20-minute paddle from shore if you rent or borrow a kayak, which is probably the best course of action given there’s no official ferry to the island. It’s a beautiful way to spend a summer afternoon.

9. Take a walk along the Riverfront. It’s a less specific idea, but another one that’s perfect for a sunny afternoon outside. Windsor offers walkways along the Detroit River that are ideal for a casual stroll with friends or a loved one.

10. Cap off a day at the Walkerville Brewery. The city of Windsor is well-known for distilleries, and you can still tour some of them. But Walkerville Brewery makes for a more entertaining stop. It’s an appealing, casual venue in an interesting corner of the city, and you can try all the in-house brews available. We recommend this as a place to stop after a Riverfront walk or a tour of Peche Island.
