If you’re a fan of the Coastal Grandma trend, but currently on a budget or not shopping, despair not. Chances are you have the trend already hanging in your closet. So what is the Coastal Grandmother aesthetic? It’s based on the clean and classic style of women living their peaceful lives near the ocean. Think Diane Keaton in the Nancy Meyers movie, Something’s Gotta Give, set in the Hamptons. While most of us aren’t going to be owning any beachfront property any time soon, we can still exude that polished yet laid back easy style this summer … without setting foot in a new-clothing store.
What should you be shopping for in your closet? Think classic pieces like denim with no rips or distressing. A straight wider leg and high rise works best. The color palette should be a mix of white, black, light blue and beige. A timeless Breton stripe or white top with black stripe works great. Aim for sleeves and higher necklines. Straw hats and bags are an absolute must. If you don’t have these items in your closet, a quick trip to the thrift shop can help. Your button-ups are really going to help bring this look home. A proper collar gives that desired polish while scarves, especially cotton and linen ones, in whites or soft blues are another great way to dive into this trend. Be sure to keep your look comfortable and not too contrived. It should look effortless. And speaking of comfortable, simple slides, definitely flats, or even Birkenstocks are the best shoe choices.
