One of the easiest trends of the last few fashion week seasons is the recurrence of loungewear styled as daywear—a fusion of comfort and style, where clothes typically reserved for the bedroom are seen on the streets. Brands like Louis Vuitton, MaxMara, and Versace have embraced the trend by incorporating silk pyjama matching sets in their resort collections, showcasing luxe loungewear as a way to look well put together. Supported by lingerie-core, a purposeful and liberating way to leave the house in sheer undergarments and fabrics, the idea of luxury loungewear during the day is less than unusual. Both trends signify the growing awareness among individuals about the importance of utility and functionality, demonstrating that style and comfort can merge. Luxury loungewear shows that our daily clothing choices are more flexible, from the office to the street and from day to night. The Disco Hour, a Toronto-based luxury loungewear brand that provides high-quality, stylish and comfortable silk sets that can be worn both in and out of the bedroom, is celebrating its launch with a capsule collection committed to elevating luxury loungewear as daywear. We chatted with The Disco Hour founder Heather Finlay to learn more. —Vita Daily
Hi Heather! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.
Hi! I’m Heather, founder of Toronto-based clothing brand The Disco Hour, and lover of all things sparkly and colourful! As much as I sometimes try to wear all black and surround myself with neutrals, I can’t say no to hot pink and a dash of glitter! After studying Economics at university, I took a hard left and I actually ended up at Citytv’s Fashion Television, where I went behind the scenes with everyone from fashion designers and artists to photographers and architects. From that role, I’ve always been inspired by creatives who take risks and make the world a more exciting and interesting place.
When and why did you launch The Disco Hour? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?
I launched The Disco Hour about a year ago. My sisters and I had been taking care of my dad during a long illness, and whenever I showed up wearing tons of colour and maybe even some sequins, he told me it made him happy! He said it made him think of the old Dick Tracy character Sparkle Plenty (best name ever). So I embraced it and loved the idea of wearing clothes that make us, or even others, smile and feel good. I also really value small local brands and thought I could add to that slow fashion mix with something a bit colourful, sparkly and fun.
The name ‘The Disco Hour’ came from my kids – we’ve always had a disco ball in our living room, and when the kids were little and came home from school, the sun would hit it and light up the room with a ton of sparkles. It was magical. We’d dance around and call it ‘the disco hour’! They’re too cool to dance with me now, but we still have the disco ball in our home!
What products/services do you currently offer, and what makes them unique?
Our current collection includes 100% custom print silk PJ sets, sequin leisure sets and sparkly velvet tracksuits, all made by a small team in Toronto. Everything we have are meant to be comfortable and elevated, without taking itself too seriously. Along with making clothes that are fun to wear, I’m also using thediscohour.com to celebrate other creatives who inspire me, as well as over at my other online platform, thesuperloop.com, another venture of mine that celebrates the ideas and work of people in my community.
We’ve seen the rise of the loungewear-to-daywear trend over the last couple of years, even from designer brands like Louis Vuitton, MaxMara and Versace; what first fuelled this trend, and what’s keeping it going?
It’s no secret that coming out of the pandemic, everyone became pretty comfortable with loungewear. Naturally, this state of comfort was reflected on high fashion runways as designer brands took a luxury approach to athleisure wear. The Disco Hour takes more of a playful spin on that. For me, it’s all about comfort and ease – like a Jenna Lyons vibe – I love how she combines masculine style with a bit of glitter, and she never looks like she’s tried too hard.
When it comes to clothing that can be worn both in and out of the bedroom, what are some of your top styling tips? Also, is it simply a matter of rolling out of bed and not changing clothes for the day, or is it more intentional than that?
Well, to be honest, I don’t wear PJs to bed. For me, they’re more like a daytime leisure set. They’re also super versatile and great to mix and match. My favourite is wearing the PJ pants with an oversized, cozy sweatshirt. All the sets look great for a night out with sneakers or heels and your favourite accessories. If you don’t want to go head to toe in a set, you can pair the pants with a tank top, sweater, silk blouse, or blazer. And the sequin sweatshirts and silk tops look cool dressed down with jeans.
Of your current offerings, which is your favourite print and why?
I think the FUN ones are my favourite – because that’s really what The Disco Hour is about – the feeling that something FUN is about to happen! My friend wore the FUN pants with a bikini top in Miami recently and she looked incredible! But wearing them around the house with slippers and maybe a glass of wine can spark a lot of joy too 😉

My favourite step in my evening routine is writing in my journal! I love setting goals in it, I love reflecting on the days highs, and I also find it therapeutic to reflect and write down the lows. It allows me to leave them in the day they happened, and not bring them into tomorrow.
