We caught up with Grace Lee, Lead Makeup Artist for Maybelline New York, to talk all things Super Stay Lumi-Matte Foundation—a game-changing drugstore staple with 30-hour wear, a feather-light feel, and a satin finish that flatters every skin type. What makes the new Super Stay Lumi-Matte Foundation different from other matte foundations on the market?

First of all, there is a 30H wear claim! And it literally stays put! It’s transfer, sweat and water resistant without needing to touch up constantly. And the payoff says Matte but it’s not a typical “matte” texture. Which leads to next question 

Luminous and matte seem like opposites—how does Lumi-Matte achieve both finishes in one formula?

Yes it does sound like an oxymoron! I think it delivers this luminous payoff to the skin without looking oily or dewy. And then gives this matted like skin so it looks refined and set. If anything I would say it dries down to this beautiful satin finish. 

What skin types or makeup looks is this foundation best suited for?

For everyone. Honestly it’s great for all skin types. If you have extremely dry skin…. I would just prep the skin properly.

The formula is infused with amino acids—what role do those play in the finish or wear of the foundation?

Amino acids are infused to hydrate the skin. I think that’s important as you wear the foundation it doesn’t look dry or cakey. 

What’s your top tip for applying Lumi-Matte for a natural, long-lasting finish?

There are so many ways to apply! I love that it’s so buildable. I always say whatever your technique is …. Start with a thin layer and build where needed.  A brush will make it more opaque. And a damp sponge with sheer it out. 

With 24 shades available, how do you recommend someone finds their perfect match—especially when shopping drugstore?

Don’t apply it on your back of hand. It’s never the same as your face. Try to get a tester to see if it matches your jaw line. Or then bring the tester if you can,to the sunlight to see if it’s a better match 

Do you have a favourite way to wear or pair Lumi-Matte—any go-to Maybelline products that complement it perfectly?

It goes so well with instant age rewind concealer and obviously setting it with the popular fit me loose powder. I would then pair with a great brow. Lash and a lip! Super fluff brow mousse. Sky high mascara and a teddy tint and you are rocking!
