The Optimal Way To Organize Your Dresser (So You Can Actually Find Things)

Tired of rifling through a jumble of socks, tangled tees, and that one sweater that always ends up at the bottom? A well-organized dresser isn’t just aesthetically pleasing—it saves time, reduces stress, and makes getting dressed a whole lot easier. Here’s how to set up your drawers for maximum space, function, and flow:

1. Start with a Clean Slate

Empty every drawer completely. Wipe down the interior and assess what you actually wear. Donate, store, or toss anything you haven’t reached for in over a year.

2. Assign Each Drawer a Category

Designate drawers by clothing type, ideally organizing from top to bottom in the order you get dressed:

  • Top drawer: Underwear, bras, and socks
  • Second drawer: T-shirts and tanks
  • Middle drawer: Workout gear or pajamas
  • Lower drawers: Jeans, sweaters, seasonal items

3. Fold Smart, Not Flat

Use the file-folding method (à la Marie Kondo) so each item stands upright and is visible at a glance. This works especially well for T-shirts, leggings, and lounge sets.

4. Use Dividers or Bins

Small organizers within drawers help corral underwear, bras, socks, or accessories like belts and scarves. Bonus: it looks super satisfying.

5. Rotate Seasonally

Keep your dresser for your current season only. Store heavy knits or summer tanks elsewhere and switch them out as needed. This keeps your space lighter and more functional.

6. Label If It Helps

Especially useful if you’re sharing a dresser or have kids. Even subtle labels inside the drawers can keep your system consistent over time.
