5 Travel Apps I Don’t Leave Home Without

Tech

If you know me, you know I love a well-planned trip almost as much as a spontaneous weekend escape. Whether I’m adventuring with my family or sneaking in a little solo recharge time, I’ve come to rely on a handful of trusty travel apps that keep things easy, efficient, and fun. Some help me save money, others help me discover hidden gems – and all of them have made their way into my regular rotation.

Here are five of my favourites:

GasBuddy – Find the Closest (and Cheapest) Fuel

Whether we’re on a road trip or just heading out of town for a quick weekend, GasBuddy is a lifesaver. It shows you the nearest gas stations and the current prices so you can avoid those painful over-the-border fill-ups. It’s simple, accurate, and totally underrated.

Google Translate (Hover Mode!) – Read the Signs, Literally

This one feels like magic. If you haven’t tried the Google Translate “hover to translate” feature, get ready to feel like a local. Just hold your phone up to any sign, menu, or label and watch the translation appear in real time. It’s saved me in airports, markets, and more than one dinner menu situation.

Camber – Where to Eat, Sleep & Stay in Style

I recently found Camber and I’m obsessed. It’s like a curated guide to the best hotels and restaurants, minus the tourist traps. If you like beautifully designed spots with great vibes (and even better food), this app’s the one for you. It’s especially handy when I’m short on time and a little less familiar with the area but still want to discover something great.

AllTrails – For When You Want to Unplug

This one’s not just for big backcountry hikes. With the mountains just a quick drive away in Calgary, it’s amazing for finding local trails close to home. AllTrails helps us find those hidden gems that are family-friendly, dog-friendly, or the perfect afternoon escape. It’s been great for planning low-key adventures with the kids that match their energy level for the day.

Hopper – Flights Without the FOMO

This Montreal-based startup (hello, hometown!) takes the guesswork out of booking flights. Hopper is great because it gives you predictions on the best time to book your flights and even alerts you when prices drop. If you’re trying to be strategic about your budget while you book that dream vacation, this one’s a must.

Bonus: Sonder – The Airbnb Alternative for the Particular Planner

IYKYK. Sonder is like Airbnb, but with boutique-hotel energy and a full kitchen setup (essential when you’re travelling with kids or just want the option to cook). Think curated comfort, without the awkward key handoffs and mismatched towels.

Travel should feel exciting, not overwhelming, and with the right tools in your pocket, it can be both uncomplicated and full of meaningful moments. Small planning choices like knowing when to book, where to stay, or how to fuel up can make a big difference in how your trip (and your budget) unfolds.
