Tight Hips, Sore Back, Too Much Sitting? Here’s What Actually Helps

We’ve all heard the saying, “sitting is the new smoking.” But what does that really mean when your job keeps you glued to the computer, and your lower back and hips are constantly reminding you of it?

The good news is, keeping your body happy while working isn’t as complicated or time-consuming as you might think. It’s all about small, consistent movements throughout the day. Your body is incredibly adaptable, for better or worse. If you sit for hours at a time, your body will start to take the shape of the chair, leading to discomfort in your hips and lower back.

But here’s the flip side: if you start introducing more movement, even in small doses, your body can shift out of that stuck position. And the best part? It doesn’t take long or a major effort.

So, what does “little movements more often” look like?

Start by changing the way you sit. If you’re used to slouching forward or sinking into your chair while working, try sitting up straighter with your feet balanced firmly on the floor. Shift slightly to the front of your chair so your spine is naturally aligned, your shoulders are relaxed, and your head is balanced right over your shoulders.

Next, set a timer to get up and move once an hour. A few simple stretches can work wonders. Try a standing lunge to release tight hips, a whole-body stretch with your arms overhead to get your blood flowing, or some gentle shoulder circles to relieve upper back tension.

We often think we need a gym session or a long yoga practice to feel better, but research shows that frequent, short movement breaks can be just as effective. Those quick 2–5 minute stretches throughout your day help change joint angles, get your circulation moving, and give your brain a chance to reset. Plus, your nervous system gets some love too.

Give it a try! You’ll be surprised at how much better you feel after just a few minutes of stretching.
