Bella Gelateria Yaletown

bellaSince its 2010 inception, Bella Gelateria has won a number of accolades so head-spinningly large that recounting them would be labourious and hardly more accurate than simply stating that their gelato is the universe’s best.

Yesterday we visited Bella’s second location, well-situated on the Yaletown seawall. “I did my degree in chocolate and alcohol,” gelato-maestro James Coleridge laughed while handing us his newest creation, a gelatini (he’s not kidding—his alma mater is Florence’s Carpigiani Gelato University). “Gelatini” may sound like the name of a fairytale pixie, but these drinks are a force. Our black sesame chai was a luscious mix of spiced bourbon and a melting, dark scoop. Gelato cookie sandwiches caught our eye as well, but we felt weird asking for one while also holding a bowl of salted hazelnut gelato (we’d tell you how good that is, but we prefer the effect of miming an interstellar explosion with both hands beside our temples). Just when we thought things couldn’t get more Dionysian, platters of new, Napoletana-style pizzas were passed about, demonstrating that gelato isn’t the only Italian triumph Bella has perfectly replicated in our backyard.

The cherry on top? Faucets of pure chocolate churning away behind glass counters. —Adrienne Matei
