With temperatures rising and predictions for a hot summer, we’re sharing tips from Best Buy Canada to help you cool down before things heat up. Last year, Best Buy saw air conditioning unit sales start as early as April in anticipation for the heat waves coming over the summer months. Ninety per cent of total AC sales are portable air conditioners, and they expect to see strong demand again this year as soon as customers experience the heat. To learn more about cooling gadgets and how you can gear up early to avoid a scramble to beat the heat, we chatted with senior category leader Kayne Masih. Given the surge in demand for air conditioning units last year, what trends do you anticipate in consumer behavior as we approach the hotter months this year?
AC sales are closely related to weather so we expect to see very strong results as soon as customers experience the heat. We always plan to sell out by end of season.
Can you share any new or unique features that consumers can expect from air conditioning units this year, particularly in terms of energy consumption and noise reduction?
New technology for Inverter Compressor reduces power consumption and reduces the noise significantly. There is also a constant need to drain the water tank from your AC depending on the humidity level in your home and some brands have created self-evaporating features into the units where customers don’t have to take these heavy units to a drain to get rid of the water built up inside over time.
Could you elaborate on the factors driving the current demand for air conditioning units in the West Coast, especially in regions like British Columbia?
West coast demand driven by BC is very strong since BC doesn’t have a lot of homes with central AC which is pretty standard across the rest of Canada. We split our demand almost 50/50 East and West.
With the significant increase in portable air conditioner sales, how is Best Buy Canada addressing the potential challenges of meeting such high demand?
We have to place strategic bets since inventory is planned almost 9 months in advance of the season. We currently have strong inventory going into the warm summer months. SKUs start to sell out as the season progresses, but we always see a major spike when there are heat related warnings in the country.
In what ways has Best Buy Canada adapted its product offerings or strategies to cater to the evolving needs and preferences of consumers when it comes to cooling gadgets?
Our customers have gravitated towards Portable ACs since there is a large percentage of rental housing that doesn’t allow the use of Window ACs. Portable ACs are also much more flexible for customers and allow the option to move to different locations within the home as needed.
What are some key considerations for consumers when choosing an air conditioning unit, and how does Best Buy Canada assist customers in making informed decisions?
Window type, noise level and room size are the primary considerations as there are unique products that offer solutions for these. We work with our partners to ensure all of the most relevant information is included on the product pages online.

Thank goodness we had two of these units in our rental cottage in Muskoka last year. It rained almost all week and it was hot and muggy. I don’t know what we would have done without them being there were 6 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs. I VERY highly recommend them. I will definitely need a couple in my new condo this summer to keep cool during our infamous muggy summertime. Thank you!

My Condo is hotter than the oven during summer. The best thing I can do is to put on the blackouts curtain. But the room gets dark because of it and we can’t enjoy the summer sunshine at home.
