In a move that’s equal parts playful and patriotic, Air Transat has officially renamed the Atlantic Ocean—the airline’s signature transatlantic backdrop—the Canadien Ocean. Unveiled on April 1, 2025, this cheeky campaign isn’t just a wink to Canada’s enduring national pride—it’s a full-on flight path to cultural celebration.
Effective immediately, passengers aboard Air Transat flights will hear the Canadien Ocean name featured in onboard announcements. The airline is also rallying support for the change through a national petition, aiming to have the name officially recognized on maps and government documents. Because why just fly over the Atlantic, when you can soar over something that sounds a little closer to home?
The new era of air travel kicked off with a celebration on the first flight over the newly christened Canadien Ocean, one of up to 184 crossings Air Transat makes weekly. Travellers were treated to commemorative certificates and the very first official in-flight shoutout to the rebranded waters below.
“We’ve been flying the Montréal way for 37 years—bold, full of joie de vivre, and just a little cheeky,” said Xavier Szwengler, Vice President of Marketing and Loyalty at Transat. “As a proudly Canadien airline, we want to celebrate this moment with Canadians at a time when we’re rediscovering and embracing our national identity.”
To share the fun with the broader public, Air Transat also took over Toronto’s Sankofa Square (formerly Yonge-Dundas Square), unveiling the Canadien Ocean name in a full public display of tongue-in-cheek national pride.
Whether you’re heading to Europe, the Caribbean, or beyond, Air Transat invites you to book your next adventure at airtransat.com—and fly Canadien over the Canadien Ocean.
Now that’s how you make waves. —Noa Nichol
