The food world is mourning the tragic and sudden loss of Nguyễn Thị Thanh—known lovingly and globally as The Lunch Lady—who passed away on Monday, May 19, 2025, shortly after arriving at Toronto Pearson International Airport. She suffered cardiac arrest and, despite efforts by medical personnel, could not be revived.
Nguyễn Thị Thanh’s impact on the culinary world was immeasurable. For decades, her humble street food stall in Ho Chi Minh City welcomed locals and tourists alike, earning international fame after being featured in Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations. From that moment on, her name became synonymous with soulful, authentic Vietnamese cuisine, served with warmth, heart, and tradition.
Her influence transcended borders. In Canada, The Lunch Lady blossomed into a celebrated restaurant concept, with a flagship location in Vancouver that earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction three years in a row. A second Canadian outpost, set to open in Toronto on June 3, has been postponed. The Vancouver restaurant will close on Wednesday, May 21, to allow staff time to grieve.
“To the world, she was The Lunch Lady. But to me, she was my aunt, my mentor, and someone I loved like family,” shared Michael Tran, Creative Director and Co-owner of The Lunch Lady Canada. “Today, we’re mourning more than the loss of our founder. We’re mourning her warmth, her generosity—the way she lit up a room without ever needing to speak. Her smile said everything. Her impact went far beyond food. She taught us to lead with care, to cook with soul, and to stay grounded in where we come from. We’ll carry her legacy forward with honour, with gratitude, and with the same heart she brought to every bowl.”
Tributes have poured in from across the globe, as those who tasted her cooking or felt her influence reflect on her legacy—not just as a chef, but as a cultural ambassador, a teacher, and a pillar of the community.
Vigils in honour of Nguyễn Thị Thanh will be held in both Vancouver and Toronto, with dates and locations to be announced. For now, the best way to remember her is to enjoy a steaming bowl of pho, share a meal with someone you love, and carry her message forward: cook with heart, serve with soul.
