East meets West in Hong Kong, a bustling, multicultural metropolis that never sleeps. The city has been shaped by 99 years as a British colony – a deal that ended in 1997 – and its own deep roots with Cantonese Chinese culture, which come together to create the most unique place in Asia. A financial center renowned for dining, nature, and international events like Rugby Sevens and Art Basel, there’s plenty to see and do in this incredible city. Here’s how we’d spend 72 hours exploring Hong Kong. —Cassie Gill
Where To Stay
Modern luxury comes to life at the chic EAST Hong Kong. Situated in the residential neighborhood of Taikoo, the five-star hotel is a welcome escape from the usual hustle and bustle of this Asian metropolis. Sustainability and design are at the forefront of the bright and airy design, with contemporary art installations and a casual coworking space. Room design is exceptional in the Harbour View rooms, which feature floor-to-ceiling windows to soak in the scenery. The open-concept rooms are stylish, practical, and luxe all at once, making for the perfect urban oasis. Food at FEAST was also divine for both breakfast and lunch: don’t sleep on either buffet, which offer plenty of Western and Asian options for whatever your taste buds desire.
Where To Eat
This one Michelin-starred restaurant has been a darling of Hong Kong’s international dining scene since 2019. In the heart of trendy Soho, Louise – housed in a stunning heritage building — leans into 1930s Colonial style accented with lush greenery. The menu boasts traditional French cuisine with a twist: it’s impossible to make a bad choice here but for first-timers, the yellow Roasted Hong Kong Chicken served with niigata rice, green salad and chicken jus is to die for. Cocktails are also lovely here – the tea-infused Saint Earl Grey is always a hit, while the signature Louise Negroni was an updated take on the classic.
Easily Hong Kong’s most famous dining spot around the globe. While other cities have gotten Mott 32 locations over the years – including Toronto and Vancouver – there’s still something special about going to the original location. The restaurant is renowned for their Applewood Roasted Peking Duck, which absolutely lives up to the hype. The duck is served with delectable freshly steamed pancakes, their own house-made hoisin sauce, scallions, cucumber and raw cane sugar.
Welcome to dim sum with a contemporary twist. The stylish Madame Fu is located in the repurposed Tai Kwun prison grounds, now filled with local shops, galleries, restaurants and more. Lunch ambiance is buzzy and fun, while the menu offers up an array of classic and unexpected dumplings. Where Madame Fu really shines is on the vegetarian dim sum options like mozzarella and spinach and mushroom and black truffle, alongside the pan-fried vegetable beancurd roll.
You know you’re in the right place when you see the long, snaking line on Staunton Street. This is largely due to the popularity of Vission Bakery’s pistachio custard tarts made up of brioche feuilletee (the dough), baked pistachio custard, and crunchy pistachio praline. Other treats here are worth the wait, too, like the freshly made donuts and beautifully designed cakes.
Where To Drink
This famed bar still hasn’t slown down in popularity over the years. Australian designer Ashley Sutton took influence from both nature and mines for this hotspot venue, which has a rustic whimsical charm to it. 10,000 butterflies hang from the ceilings, an homage to Sutton’s children’s book series (also called The Iron Fairies). Delicious cocktails also play into the theme, like The Fairy Cobbler, which is a blend of Woodford Reserve Bourbon with strawberry, spicy marsala and blackcurrant.
Bar Leone ranked number two out of the World’s 50 Best Bars in 2024. Vancouverites may also recognize the name, as Bar Leone took over the Botanist Bar at Fairmont Pacific Rim for a guest appearance in April 2024. The signature drink at this Italian-style joint is the olive oil whiskey sour with brandy, oloroso sherry, and, as the name suggests, olive oil. Decor is fun, too, paying homage to vintage Italian pop culture and classic Roman watering holes.
Where To Caffeinate
This IG-worthy cafe has several locations in the city, but the most popular is definitely the Roastery on Hollywood Road. An open and modern café, this is a great spot to both enjoy the coffee and pastries, but also hang out with pals (or as they say at Elephant Grounds, “Coffee & Chill”). We love the lattes and earl grey scones but honestly, everything on the menu looks good.
Head over to Repulse Bay Beach for a scenic stroll before or after popping into Caffè Parabolica. Housed in an old 1920s hotel, this cool brunch and espresso spot serves a Japanese-inspired menu. The premium hotcake with caramelised pecan butter, nutter grilled avocado sourdough and freshly baked scones were all a delight, while the cloudy latte and flat whites were made to perfection. The caffè also runs their own bakeshop next door, home the most adorable custom wrapped ice cream sandwiches.
Where To Shop
Soho
This youthful neighborhood is always a vibe. Find restaurants, cafes, and plenty of shops in Soho, centered around Hollywood Road. Korean lifestyle and beauty brand NONFICTION has a boutique to sample their fragrances, luscious hand creams and other products all packaged in their signature minimal aesthetic (their giftsets make for great items to take home). Holy Club is another Soho store worth popping into for sneakers: the boutique carries a well-curated assortment from New Balance and harder-to-get pairs like Dior’s Air Jordan 1’s. Finally, designer resale is a must in HK: we love stopping into Hollywood Road’s Hula to peep the clothes and bags.
Causeway Bay
Find everything under the sun in Causeway Bay, from your high-end luxury labels like Chanel, local Hong Kong brands like Case-Mate, and contemporary skincare shops including Aesop. Hong Kong is known for its shopping, primarily because of better stock – it’s a great city to hunt down a harder to find designer item, or at least have more colour and size options – as well as potentially cheaper prices. The city’s flagship luxury department store, Lane Crawford, is also worth a visit in the area.
What To Do
Nothing says iconic Hong Kong quite like the tram ride up to Victoria Peak, the tallest hill on Hong Kong Island. The short and steep ride up is surprisingly smooth (and just slightly thrilling). Soak in the views of the metropolitan city and gorgeous harbour before exploring the shops and restaurants. If you’re craving non-Asian food, pizza at Italian restaurant Falcone – lead by Naples-born Roberta De Sario – is a must. Afterwards, nosh on dessert at sister cake bar Butter: the triple chocolate is airy and light, while the red velvet is a little richer but easily our #1.
Another quintessential Hong Kong activity. The city is globally known for its magnificent skyline – and there’s no better way to truly see it than on an evening cruise. Board the Aqualuna boat – a traditional Chinese junk ship – and sail the Victoria Harbour as you sip a glass of bubbly for the 45-minute ride. Don’t forget a light jacket and your camera.
Whether there’s kids in your crew or not, this international Disneyland park is still worth a visit. We love that it’s on the smaller side, making it a perfect half-day excursion (or less, depending on how you allocate your time). The park has a few elements that you won’t find in North America, including a fairly new World of Frozen inspired by the world of Anna and Elsa. There’s also some updated takes on the classics: Haunted Mansion is reimagined as the Mystic Manor, while Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is replaced by the arguably more fun Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars.
Who To Fly
Cathay Pacific is Hong Kong’s flagship carrier, and synonymous with being a trailblazer in aviation luxury. The airline has hubs in both Vancouver (where they have their own branded lounge) as well as Toronto. Even at the economy level, the airline delivers far and above any Canadian competitor when it comes to service, experience, and food. For those looking to experience a business or first-class product, you won’t be disappointed: on flights back from HKG, indulge in Michelin star offerings from Dudells and Louise before indulging in the Bamford amenity kit and laying flat in cozy linens for a full night’s sleep. Hungry again? Order the burger or noodles from the all-day menu. On the Hong Kong end, business and first-class passengers can visit an array of lounges – including The Pier, which offers a teahouse by JING, a noodle bar, coffee cart and buffet, along with shower facilities and work areas. Cathay Pacific is also rolling out their upgraded Aria business class suites on the Vancouver route later this year, which will include upgraded technology like wireless charging, suite doors, more storage and a larger entertainment screen – and perhaps most importantly – an even cozier seat.
