I Tried New York City’s Top Pilates Classes: Here’s What I Thought (Ranked)

June 18, 2025

There’s no shortage of buzz around the best workout classes in New York City. If you’re into pilates, barre, or yoga-based fitness you will have seen your favorite influencers give their takes on some of the city’s best classes. Physique 57, Pure Barre, SolidCore, CorePower Yoga, and Power Pilates are at the top of almost every list so, when I recently took a trip to NYC, I decided to put these classes to the test and give an honest review.

Before diving in, here’s a little context: I’m no stranger to the world of pilates. I regularly attend reformer, Lagree, and mat pilates classes. I’ve dabbled in hot yoga and barre before, but to be honest, I’ve never been their biggest fan—often finding them more slow-paced than challenging. So going in, I was skeptical. How hard could they really be?

Physique 57 – The Standout Favorite

Let’s just get straight to the point: Physique 57 was my absolute favorite. So much so that I ended up going to three classes there during my one-week stay in the city.

What sets it apart? The energy. From the moment you step in, you feel the intensity—not just physically, but mentally too. The instructors are upbeat and motivating without being overwhelming, and the choreography blends traditional barre with dynamic strength training and cardio bursts that genuinely leave you sweating. My legs were shaking (in the best way), my core was firing, and I walked out of each class feeling stronger, taller, and surprisingly sore in muscles I forgot existed.

If you’re someone who usually finds barre too “easy” or slow, this is the class that might just change your mind.

Pure Barre – Great Fundamentals, Lower Intensity

Pure Barre is one of the most recognizable names in barre fitness, and for good reason. It’s clean, consistent, and very technique-focused. The class I attended was polished and professional, with clear cues and well-structured movements. That said, compared to Physique 57, the intensity felt dialed back.

For beginners or those looking for a lower-impact option that emphasizes posture, alignment, and isolated muscle work, Pure Barre is ideal. But if you’re craving something more athletic or high-energy, it might feel a bit tame.

SolidCore – Pilates for Reformer Lovers

SolidCore is not for the faint of heart. Think of it as Lagree-style reformer pilates on overdrive. Every movement is slow and controlled, yet you’re trembling almost immediately—and that burn stays with you well after class is over.

If you’re someone who thrives on high-intensity, resistance-based workouts and likes being pushed to the edge, this is your place. It’s a killer core workout, and the dark, neon-lit studio with pulsing music adds an edgy, almost nightclub-like vibe. It’s not exactly relaxing, but it is incredibly effective.

CorePower Yoga – Next Level Yoga

Hot yoga has never been my go-to. I usually find it more meditative than physically challenging. But CorePower Yoga’s “Sculpt” class changed that impression entirely. It’s yoga, yes—but mixed with strength training, cardio, and some serious core engagement.

By the end of the session, I was out of breath, in the best way possible. This class is a solid choice if you’re looking to blend mindfulness and movement with a serious challenge. Just be prepared: it gets hot in there.

Power Pilates – Classic Pilates, with a Serious Burn

If you’re a pilates purist, Power Pilates is a must. The studio I visited was sleek, and the instructors clearly knew their stuff. The class followed classical pilates principles with precision, using the reformer and other traditional equipment.

This isn’t the flashy, fast-paced type of workout you get at SolidCore—but don’t be fooled. The attention to detail and emphasis on form delivers a deep, focused burn. It’s a more subtle challenge, but an effective one for building strength and control.

Final Verdict

If I had to rank these based on overall experience, challenge, and how likely I’d be to return:

  1. Physique 57 – Energizing, fun, and unexpectedly tough.
  2. SolidCore – Brutally effective with a cool, hardcore vibe.
  3. CorePower Yoga – A game-changer for anyone skeptical of yoga.
  4. Power Pilates – A classic, refined experience that delivers results.
  5. Pure Barre – Great for fundamentals, but a bit too gentle for my taste.

NYC has no shortage of boutique fitness options, and while each of these studios brought something different to the table, Physique 57 stole the show for me. Whether you’re a barre skeptic or a reformer addict, there’s something in this list that will challenge you—and maybe even surprise you. —Alexandra Aulicino
