Known for its elegant atmosphere, sweeping views of the city, and vibrant entertainment scene, The Roof quickly became a cornerstone of Vancouver’s nightlife. With nightly performances by Dal Richards and his Orchestra over a remarkable 25-year run, the venue became synonymous with big band music, drawing large crowds eager to dance, dine, and socialize in a sophisticated setting. How did events like live swing nights and ballroom dancing shape social life in Vancouver at the time?
I grew up taking ballroom/latin dancing at my Aunt’s dance studio here is Vancouver and we would come to The Roof to dance. The city was a smaller more connected community at the time. It helped shape who I am and guided me to my career in hospitality as a Concierge here at the hotel. It has given me the opportunity to remain connected to the community. I think it was a much more social time back then and I am happy to see it back again and hope more events of this nature come back to the city.
Dal Richards is being honoured as the “King of Swing” at this event. Can you share a few memorable stories or little-known facts about his connection to The Roof?
The Dal Richard’s Orchestra began playing The Panorama Roof with his eleven-piece-band on May 1, 1940. Mart Kenny and His Western Gentlemen were under contract at the time were invited to play a six-week gig at The Royal York in Toronto and had Dal and his Orchestra step in to cover their absence. Dal was 22 years of age when he started with us and stretched that 6 weeks into a 25-year career here at the hotel.
He also judged an amateur singing contest at the PNE one year. That’s when Michael Buble stepped up onto the stage and the rest is history. Michael Buble has also played “The Roof” with Dal’s Orchestra backing him up.
