When it comes to muscle-toning technology, not all devices are created equal—and no one knows that better than Lisa Blair, founder of The SkinGirls. In this candid Q&A, Lisa breaks down the real differences between industry heavyweights Evolve and Emsculpt, reveals why she swears by Evolve’s customizable approach, and shares how clients are achieving firmer, smoother, more defined bodies without lifting a finger. From technology insights to realistic results, here’s everything you need to know before booking your next body-sculpting session. —Noa Nichol

In your experience, what are the main differences between Evolve Tone and Emsculpt in terms of technology, muscle engagement, and overall results?

In my opinion, Evolve Tone is far more customizable. It comes with four applicators, which means you can target multiple muscle zones at the same time or place them symmetrically—say, both sides of the abdomen, the inner thighs, arms, or glutes. Emsculpt, on the other hand, comes with one large applicator (or two for smaller areas), which really limits placement and makes it less flexible when trying to treat smaller or more specific areas.

You’ve mentioned that Evolve delivers superior results in your opinion. What’s led you to that conclusion?

When I tried Emsculpt myself, I hit the highest intensity level right in the first session. While that might sound great, it actually meant there was no room to progress in the following sessions, which can cap muscle growth. With Evolve, I started at about 15 out of 50 on the intensity scale, and even two years later, I’m still gradually increasing. It feels more like a real workout—where you keep adding weight or reps over time—rather than staying at the same level. That ongoing challenge to the muscles is, in my opinion, what makes Evolve produce better, longer-lasting results.

How do these treatments compare when it comes to comfort, recovery, and post-treatment soreness?

With Evolve, I definitely felt more sore afterward—in a good way—and noticed more definition compared to my Emsculpt experience. Honestly, I wasn’t overly impressed with my Emsculpt results after four sessions, and I wouldn’t feel right charging clients for something I didn’t believe in.

Beyond muscle toning, what other benefits do your clients notice with Evolve?

Clients often tell me they feel more confident, notice firmer, tighter skin, and see smoother texture thanks to increased collagen and elastin production. And, of course, they love seeing more muscle definition without having to lift a finger—or a butt cheek! Because Evolve has multiple attachments, we can completely tailor the treatment: Tone for muscle building, Tite for skin tightening, and Transform for a combination of fat reduction, skin tightening, and muscle building.

Are there certain body types, fitness levels, or goals where Evolve tends to outperform Emsculpt?

Yes—Evolve’s flexibility means it can be adapted to a wider range of body types and goals. Whether a client wants to focus purely on muscle building, tackle skin laxity, or reduce stubborn fat, we can mix and match modalities to meet their needs—something Emsculpt simply doesn’t offer.

How important is it to combine Evolve Tone with other treatments or lifestyle changes?

It’s incredibly important. That’s what makes the Evolve platform so great—it already has multiple modalities built in. You can build muscle with Tone, tighten skin with Tite, and reduce fat with Transform. Pairing these treatments with a healthy lifestyle only enhances the results.

What advancements in body contouring technology are you most excited about?

I’m a huge fan of InMode and have worked with their devices since 2012. They’re constantly innovating, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

How do you help clients set realistic expectations?

It all starts with the consultation. We take the time to understand each client’s goals and make sure they’re realistic and achievable. I explain exactly what to expect from the process, how soon they might see changes, and what kind of maintenance is involved. The goal is to make sure every client feels informed, supported, and confident in their treatment plan.

If you could address one common myth about non-invasive muscle-toning devices, what would it be?

That they’re a replacement for a healthy lifestyle. They’re not. But they are fantastic tools to help enhance, maintain, or accelerate results—especially for those stubborn areas that are tough to target with diet and exercise alone.
