There’s a quiet, radical kind of beauty in choosing yourself—and that’s exactly the impulse driving the growing movement of boudoir photography for women over 40. In Vancouver, photographer Jennifer Williams has spent nearly two decades reframing boudoir as a practice of self-connection rather than performance for anyone else. “When I first started shooting boudoir in 2008, it was mostly a ‘do this for your man’ type of mindset,” she admits. “But in the last few years the majority of my clients have been coming in to do this just for themselves. They’re looking for a way to reconnect to themselves and their body, and learn to appreciate and love the way they look now.”
That shift—from a partner’s gaze to midlife reclamation—is, indeed, everything, and these days, Williams is careful to separate erotic spectacle from sensual celebration. “While some photographers lean into a more erotic style, I generally create more sensual imagery that celebrates a woman’s body,” she explains. Her clients agree: women arrive nervous, sometimes embarrassed, often carrying decades of negative messages about aging bodies—and leave surprised at how transformative the experience can be.
“By the time someone books a session, I think she’s conquered a little bit of the fear,” Williams says. Still, many bring real anxieties: “They think they are ‘too old’ or ‘not sexy’—this actually makes me sad to hear because I know that they probably have this idea of what sexy is supposed to look like.” Her response is practical and kind. She customizes posing, lighting and styling to minimize insecurities and accentuate strengths; if a client has bad knees or a back injury, “I have modifications for everything,” she notes. “I want every single client to feel like she is getting the same quality and style as what’s on my website, regardless of her physical ability.”
Preparation is as much about mindset as wardrobe. Williams walks clients through what to expect beforehand so there’s no blank, panicked moment in front of the camera. “You won’t have a moment to be in your head worrying about what to do, because I will be telling you what to do with your hands, where to look, etc. And if you aren’t sure how to do something, I’ll just model the pose myself—I’ve been known to roll around on the floor to demonstrate!”
Styling, she says, should feel authentic. Her top tips: don’t force lacy lingerie if it feels weird; shop your closet first (an oversized cardigan or a little black dress can be unexpectedly sexy); and cut the size label off if it’s making you nervous. “Women’s sizing is all over the map and if something fits you properly, you’re going to look like a million bucks,” she insists.
When it comes to editing, Williams favours realism over erasure: “I do my best to soften and minimize lines without changing the face. I want my clients to still look like themselves—just a more rested, hydrated and polished version.” She’ll smooth an area if she knows it will distract a client from seeing the whole image—but never produce an impossible version of someone.
Privacy matters here as much as empowerment. Williams always asks permission before sharing images and gives clients control over face-on or cropped options. “My clients’ comfort and privacy is extremely important to me,” she says. That trust is part of why the work is so powerful: women can step into a room where they are seen without judgment and leave with evidence—images—that they are still worthy of desire, celebration and care.
“Honestly, you’re going to wonder what you were so nervous about,” Williams tells anyone wavering on the idea. For many, boudoir over 40 is less about a photograph and more about a reclaimed story: one where age adds texture, confidence replaces doubt, and beauty is finally allowed to be complicated and true. —Noa Nichol
