Fragrance Layering: How To Master Scent’s Biggest Trend

October 29, 2025

Health & Beauty

The concept of having one signature scent is far from new, but fragrance layering has quietly become the next frontier of the fragrance world. You may have seen creators on social media combining body lotions, oils, and perfumes to craft one’s own olfactory identity. Furthermore, Gen Z is embracing the idea of a perfume “wardrobe” as opposed to a signature scent. With brands like Kayali to D.S. & Durga introducing layering sets and fragrance primers, fragrance layering is reshaping the entire industry. Layering lets you create a scent that may not otherwise exist, boost longevity of your favourite fragrances, and control intensity. In contrast to the spritz and go approach, layering allows you to customize, adapt, and evolve your fragrance as your mood or season shifts. —Maddie Cleride

What is Fragrance Layering?

At its core, layering means applying two or more scented products in sequence so they interact and evolve together. The goal is to create synergy, not conflict. Rather than slathering on perfumes, you build the scent, often starting with creams or lotions, then oils, then alcohol-based fragrances last. Fragrance binds to the oils in your skin, so applying perfume over a lotion or oil gives the scent molecules something to cling to, thus increasing longevity.

How to Do it Right: Tips & Techniques

  • Hydrate first.

Spray or moisturize your skin when it is still slightly damp to lock in scent.

  • Heavy to light.

Begin with a scented body cream or balm, they layer a fragrance oil if you have one, and finish with perfume. This order allows each element to do its job. Another old trick is to add a bit of Vaseline before spraying.

  • Spray or dab in the same zone.

To allow the layers to merge properly, stack your fragrances in the same area, rather than scattering them.

  • Let the blend settle.

After each layer, wait a minute or two for scents to settle on your skin before adding the next. Then wear it to see how the notes evolve. 2 or 3 layers are plenty.

  • Experiment!

Scents smell different on everybody – somebody’s signature stack may not work at all for you.
