Catch Bif Naked at Vancouver’s Rio Theatre on November 4 for a night that’s part screening, part secret show—but first, read our Q&A where the Canadian punk icon rips into the real story behind the legend. From surviving cancer and industry brutality to turning pain into anthem-ready truth, Bif’s conversation is raw, unfiltered, and fiercely hopeful—just like her music. —Noa Nichol

The film is a raw, unfiltered look at your life—what was the one scene you insisted had to be in the documentary because it truly defines who Bif Naked is?

There were no scenes that I felt like I had any say about as I didn’t see the film until it was completed. I was very emotional when I saw the final film because I believe in my heart that Pollyanna Hardwicke-Brown absolutely knows me inside and out and very thoughtfully and tenderly told my story.

You’ve turned immense pain into art—how do you channel trauma into songwriting and performance without losing yourself in the process?

I think the truth is as a songwriter and as a performer, I never lose myself in the process of turning trauma into art. In fact, the truth is I find myself.

After everything you’ve survived—cancer, addiction, assault, major health scares—what does resilience look like for you now, day to day?

I think resilience looks so different for all of us and as a woman resilience looks like survival on a daily basis for every one of us and as a woman who is getting older that only gets amplified every single day year after year in these times, I think there are more women who are aging out of their jobs, aging out of their purposes, And nowadays aging out of the workforce. It’s a scary time in the world on every continent. It’s a scary time to be a woman- and it’s a relative in every different society. So, for someone like me: I think that I have to remain positive-  not only for myself, but for other people who may be need someone to try and be a voice or a mentor.

This hometown premiere at the Rio Theatre feels huge—what does coming back to Vancouver to share this film and an acoustic set mean to you personally?

It is beyond emotional for me. It is so meaningful and so special.

On one hand, I feel like it’s a family reunion in many ways, another it feels like the homecoming dance. I feel like I could die happy but I also feel that way every time I play a concert at the Rick Shaw. It’s my community. It’s my hometown friends. I always feel safe. I wanna stay there forever. I just wanna go and stand in the middle of the crowd and just hug everyone and never ever leave. It’s the only safe place. It’s very hard to describe, but I feel like I could disappear Into the witness protection program with all my friends and be happy forever in the middle of my hometown crowd I love everyone so much. I feel totally accepted.

Your live shows are legendary for their intensity—how does an acoustic set change the way you tell your story on stage?

Playing an acoustic set is so magical and so special for me. It’s very vulnerable and it’s delivery but at the same time there’s nothing as sweet and loving. It’s kind of quirky and maybe even a little corny in a way but it’s very very special I love to do it.

The documentary touches on the cost of authenticity—have there been moments where staying true to yourself almost cost you everything, and would you make the same choices again?

I would never change a thing and if I could do it all over again, I would do it exactly the same way only I would stop apologizing all the time and stop marrying the wrong guys!

You’ve been a punk-pioneer, an advocate, a poet—what responsibility, if any, do you feel to mentor the next generation of misfits and musicians?

I’ve always believed in living by example and I stand behind that it’s all we can really do Joey shithead taught me talk minus action equals nothing and it’s the truth so we really do have to walk the walk and that’s how you mentor the younger generation you lead by example They’re either gonna pick up on it or they’re not and I hate to break it to you but so far a lot of the younger generation is kind of missing the boat lol but they’ll get there. I have faith in them. I have faith in everyone.

Music industry pressures can be brutal—what systems or people helped you survive the business side of fame, and what would you change for artists coming up now?

I have to credit my manager of 32 years Peter Karroll, who has been there for me from the beginning. He has been the voice of reason and my business partner since I was 22 years of age and when I didn’t believe in myself, he believed in me and so you have to look at being in a band Almost like being on a team, and the manager is kind of like the coach in a way you have to listen to your coach sometimes you have to know what your strengths are and you have to play the game well and you have to just get out there and take your shot. You have to do your best And you have to listen to your coach. It’s a team effort. I also have to credit my band, Doug Fury and Chiko Misomali. We are all in the trenches together.

It’s incredible.

If you could give your younger self one piece of rock-and-roll advice—about love, career, or simply surviving—what would it be?

You know what it’s gonna be. And I wish I took my own advice when I was younger, but at least I take it now. YOU HAVE TO LOVE YOURSELF NO MATTER WHAT!

What’s next after this film and tour—are there new chapters you’re hungry to explore creatively or causes you’re ready to champion louder than ever?

I keep threatening my manager that I’m gonna go into politics. LOL.

But truthfully, I feel like I’m only halfway through my performing arts career. I have a lot of touring left to do writing new music and I’m halfway through writing another book. But you never know I’m always up for a new adventure.
