We sat down with Angela Cristiano, daughter of the brand’s founder, to talk about the science behind their signature sprouted quinoa and brown rice puffs. Frankie’s Organic is a true family brand—what’s one food or kitchen memory from growing up that still shapes how you think about snacking today?
Honestly, my favorite food memory is being on our family farm with my Nonno Francesco — Grandpa Frankie. That’s really where everything began.
Some of my best childhood memories are of picking blackberries straight from the bushes, growing watermelons in the summer heat, collecting fresh eggs, and learning how food actually comes from the earth. Nonno taught us to respect ingredients, to grow things naturally, and to appreciate simple, real food.
That experience shaped how I think about snacking today. For me, snacks shouldn’t just be convenient — they should come from a place of integrity. Frankie’s Organic exists because of those early lessons: that what we feed our families matters, and that food grown with care always tastes better.
As the founder’s daughter, how do you balance honouring your family’s original vision while helping Frankie’s Organic evolve for today’s snack-loving shoppers?
This is truly a family business, everyone including my husband Matt, my parents, my brothers and we even get my kids involved — we’re all equally invested in the growth, the vision, and staying true to the values my grandfather built it on.
My husband and I work together every day to make sure that as we grow, we don’t lose the heart of the brand. My grandfather believed in simple, honest food made with integrity, and that foundation guides every decision we make. But at the same time, we’re constantly listening to today’s shoppers — what families want in their lunchboxes, what parents are reading on labels, and how snacking habits are evolving.
We take what he taught us — quality, transparency, and care — and apply it in a way that feels relevant for today’s households. We’re proud not only to build Frankie’s Organic, but also to manufacture for other favorite brands across North America. That gives us a unique perspective and allows us to stay innovative, creative, and ahead of where the snack category is going — while always staying rooted in our family values.
Let’s talk ingredients—why was it important for Frankie’s to focus on baked (not fried) snacks made with things like sprouted quinoa and brown rice?
As I mentioned, we spend a lot of time listening to what today’s shoppers are looking for — and there’s been a real shift toward ingredient transparency and quality.
Choosing baked instead of fried was very intentional. We wanted to create a snack that feels lighter, less greasy, and something you can feel good about putting in a lunchbox or enjoying yourself without that heavy feeling. Baking allows the ingredients to shine instead of masking them.
Using ingredients like sprouted quinoa and brown rice is part of that philosophy. Sprouted grains are easier to digest and offer a more nutrient-dense base, and we’re continuing to evolve the brand by incorporating more vegetables, avocado oil, and thoughtfully sourced ingredients.
For us, it’s not about chasing trends — it’s about staying relevant while staying true to our values. If we wouldn’t feel good serving it to our own kids, it doesn’t make it into a Frankie’s bag.
The White Cheddar and BBQ Puffs are fan favourites—how do you approach flavour development so snacks feel indulgent and wholesome at the same time?
Flavour is everything — because if it doesn’t taste amazing, it doesn’t matter how clean the ingredient list is.
When we develop flavours like White Cheddar and BBQ, the goal is always balance. We want that indulgent, craveable first bite — the kind that makes you reach back into the bag — but without relying on artificial ingredients or overpowering additives. The sweet spot is when a parent feels good about the label… and a kid just thinks it tastes awesome.
If someone is discovering Frankie’s Organic for the first time, which puff do you tell them to try first—and why?
I usually say BBQ or White Cheddar — they’re Canadian favourites and a great introduction to the brand. You get that nostalgic, classic flavor, just better for you.
But I also love our Avocado Oil & Himalayan Pink Salt. It’s only three ingredients and really showcases how simple can still be incredibly delicious.
Avocado oil, Himalayan pink salt, organic ingredients—how do you decide when an ingredient is worth the upgrade, even if it’s more challenging to source?
Ingredients like avocado oil or Himalayan pink salt aren’t chosen for trend value — they’re chosen because they elevate the quality, flavour, and overall integrity of the snack. If an upgrade makes the product cleaner, tastes better, or aligns more closely with our values, then it’s worth the extra effort to source properly.
We’ve learned that doing it the right way isn’t always the easiest way — but it’s always the right long-term decision for the brand.
What’s your ultimate snack moment—movie night, road trip, lunchbox hero—and how do Frankie’s snacks fit into your real-life routine?
It’s definitely our kids’ lunchboxes and our weekend movie nights. I love packing snacks that I actually feel good about — not just something convenient.
We’re big on cozy weekends at home. We’ll throw on a movie, open a bag, and just hang out together. And honestly, the best part is that our kids are usually the first taste testers for new products. They’re brutally honest — so if it passes their test, we know we’re onto something.
That’s probably my favourite snack moment. It’s real life for us.
