2016 Vs. 2026: How At-Home Coffee Culture Has Transformed (Win!)

March 3, 2026

Contests, Sips

If you’ve traded your dusty drip machine for a high-tech espresso setup and mastered the art of the perfect cold foam, you’re officially part of the decade’s biggest kitchen revolution. A 10-year “version update” to our morning routines has seen Canadians move away from the 2016 obsession with quick-fix pods toward a 2026 era of “everyday luxury” and DIY barista rituals. This shift isn’t just about the caffeine—it’s a move toward slowing down, prioritizing quality, and using the coffee-making process as a genuine form of self-expression.

We sat down with Daniele Foti, VP of Marketing for Lavazza North America, to discuss how this heritage Italian brand is navigating a landscape where variety and personalization are the new essentials, and why the “science of the brew” has become our favourite at-home indulgence. —Noa Nichol

A decade ago, the industry was focused on the “convenience” of the coffee pod. Today, you’re seeing Canadians invest in elevated equipment to bring the cafe experience home. How does a heritage brand like Lavazza balance its traditional Italian roots with this new Canadian demand for high-tech, DIY barista rituals?

With the majority of coffee now consumed at home in Canada, the kitchen has effectively become the new café. For us, the opportunity isn’t about choosing between convenience and ritual, it’s about supporting both. As an Italian company with over 130 years of history, quality has always been our foundation, whether that coffee is enjoyed as a quick morning espresso or as part of a slower, more intentional ritual.

What’s changed is how consumers engage with coffee. As you mentioned, we’re seeing growing interest in whole beans and ground coffee as Canadians invest in equipment and take pride in the art of making coffee, experimenting with milk textures, or perfecting cold brew. Our role is to ensure that no matter the format, the experience delivers authentic, café-quality flavour. For Lavazza, it’s more about meeting Canadians wherever they are in their coffee journey and giving them the flexibility to choose convenience or craftsmanship without compromising on quality.

You’ve noted that many consumers are “slowing down” and prioritizing quality over a quick fix. In an era of instant gratification, why do you think the coffee-making ritual has become such a key form of self-expression and “everyday luxury” for Canadians?

I think what we’re seeing is a desire for control and comfort in an unpredictable world. At a time of economic uncertainty, many Canadians are turning to small indulgences for comfort and connection. Many people are choosing to spend less on coffee out and instead invest in the tools and ingredients that allow them to create quality coffee and treats at home. It’s a way to enjoy a premium experience on their own terms, making the ritual both personal and intentional.

What makes it even more meaningful is that for many Canadians (71%), this is a ritual they engage in every single day. Even if it’s the only calm moment in a busy schedule, it’s something they can rely on. In an era where so much is instant and digital, taking a few extra minutes to grind whole beans or steam milk becomes an intentional hands-on moment and a form of self-expression.

The trend has shifted from basic drip machines to complex creations like cold brews, flavoured lattes, and cold foam. From a marketing perspective, how is Lavazza evolving its product lineup in 2026 to ensure that “cafe-quality” can be achieved easily in a home kitchen?

At Lavazza, we approach this shift by ensuring our product lineup meets the full spectrum of at-home coffee experiences. For those who want convenience, our pod range delivers consistent, high-quality espresso in seconds. For those who enjoy a more hands-on approach, we offer whole beans and ground coffee that allow people to experiment with different recipes, brewing methods, and textures.

It’s an interesting time for coffee consumption as we see distinct generational preferences in flavours and formats. Across all age groups, classics like hazelnut, French vanilla, vanilla and caramel remain strong performers, showing the continued appeal of familiar, comforting profiles. Younger consumers tend to be driving demand for more indulgent, dessert-inspired options – Gen Z is embracing playful flavours like cinnamon bun or toasted marshmallow, while millennials gravitate towards richer choices like white chocolate. Older generations tend to favour deeper, more traditional flavours like amaretto. Seasonal flavours continue to spark excitement, and at Lavazza we’re leaning into this trend while staying true to our heritage with Italian dessert-inspired offerings like Vanilla Affogato and Caramel Biscotti

Lavazza is committed to helping Canadians achieve café-quality results at home, no matter the format or flavour preference. For those looking to test new recipes or to learn the perfect brewing technique, we offer recipes and inspiration so anyone can feel confident creating their favourite coffee drinks, whether they have five seconds or five minutes to spare.

Coffee consumption used to be fairly standard, but now variety and personalization are the new essentials. What data are you seeing regarding the specific types of “at-home indulgences” that Canadians are gravitating toward most—is it the science of the cold brew or the artistry of the latte?

Cold coffee has become a defining ritual for younger consumers, especially Gen Z and millennials. Nearly half of Gen Z in Canada already prefer cold coffee options, from cold brew to espresso or even espresso-based cocktails, and 73% say they enjoy flavoured coffee beverages, much more in comparison to older generations. Nearly half of Gen Z view customization as an expectation, which makes sense, because the ability to customize drinks with syrups, toppings or cold foams creates an experience that is both playful and personal.

We’re also seeing excitement around different formats. About a quarter of Canadians are open to trying new flavours, so single-serve pods and espresso are perfect for this, letting people recreate café-style cold coffee at home while exploring different flavours and textures. For me, that’s the fun part – seeing people take control of their coffee rituals and make them uniquely their own.

Looking ahead, if the last ten years were about the “convenience vs. quality” shift, what do you predict will be the defining coffee trend of the next decade as people continue to prioritize wellness and premium experiences at home?

I think the next ten years will be defined by an even stronger focus on personalization, wellness and premium experiences. Cold coffee is a trend that shows no signs of slowing – for many Gen Z consumers, it’s their first introduction to coffee, so it’s shaping their standard for what coffee can be.

We’ll also see people bringing coffee rituals into other parts of their day, especially as more Canadians head back into the office long-term. I expect we will see more experimentation with flavours and  brewing techniques. As younger consumers’ tastes continue to develop, they will shape both products and experiences, while the desire for premium, café-quality coffee – at home or on the go – will keep driving innovation in the market.

I love how this article captures the shift from quick pods in 2016 to mastering the coffee ritual at home in 2026 – it really is become a form of self-expression. As someone who enjoys both making coffee at home and exploring local cafés, I find it fascinating how even neighbourhood spots like Effy’s Cafe in NYC have deepened the coffee experience: it’s not just about grabbing a latte, but appreciating quality, atmosphere, and flavour as part of the culture https://www.effyscafe.com/
