Meet Peloton’s First Canadian Instructor: Greta Dopp

Peloton members worldwide are now welcoming more of Canada into their world through their screens with Greta Dopp, who hails from Squamish, B.C., joining the team of instructors in November. Dopp, who teaches yoga blended with sculpting and Pilates on the platform, was initially approached by someone from Peloton sliding into her DMs. “Thank god I checked my message requests!” says the 31 year old, admitting she initially thought the message was a scam.

Less than a year later, now officially settled into her apartment in New York City and teaching classes on the platform since early December, Dopp feels a strong responsibility to represent the community back home in her classes. “There’s a certain type of warmth and humility that Canadians have that I try to bring forward in my classes,” says Dopp.

When it comes to her modalities, which are having a real moment, she is happy that the narrative about Pilates in particular has started to shift, from being framed around an aesthetic lens to people wanting movement to inform them on how they feel and having a greater understanding of what the body is capable of. “I think when people connect to their bodies in that way, it’s so much more empowering and it brings a more sustainable relationship to movement,” she says.

Something she feels people overlook when it comes to Pilates? The tempo of the workouts are such a key factor in what makes it a great strength workout. “It’s not new but many people believe intensity can only come from heavier weights or more reps, but pacing can be a way to increase the challenge. When you slow things down, your body can’t rely on momentum anymore, so you have to recruit those deeper stabilizing muscles and pay more attention to your alignment,” says Dopp. Alternatively, she picks up the tempo in her Sculpt Flow classes; the faster pace calls for bringing more rhythm to the workout, resulting in an experience that can feel more playful and dynamic.

The self-professed protein smoothie girl confesses that, when it comes to fitness, as you might expect, she naturally gravitates to what she teaches – yoga (which she’s been practicing since 10th grade) and Pilates – and that high intensity cardio is not so much her jam. So to crosstrain, “I try to make it fun, maybe make it dance cardio – something more rhythmic-based,” she says. Or even just hopping onto a Citi Bike on a sunny day. “If it feels fun, it’s a great way to sneak it in.” —Karen Kwan

This is an inspiring and engaging profile that goes beyond fitness to tell a story of personal reinvention.
