Hockey’s visual identity is trading traditional aesthetics for a bold, vibrant evolution as CCM Hockey and Barbie announce a first-of-its-kind partnership. Designed to make the sport more inclusive and expressive, this collaboration fuses CCM’s world-class engineering with Barbie’s iconic aesthetic to ensure a new generation of girls sees themselves represented on the ice. By reimagining high-performance gear as a canvas for self-expression, the Barbie x CCM Collection aims to foster a sense of belonging that inspires athletes not only to enter the game but to stay in it.
We sat down with Catherine Ward, VP of Product Innovation and Commercialization at CCM Hockey, to discuss the cultural impact of this unique union and how this collection is helping athletes embrace their limitless potential while championing a more colourful future for the sport. —Noa Nichol
Challenging the Traditional Canvas: Hockey’s visual identity has long been defined by traditional, often muted narratives. How does fusing CCM’s world-class engineering with the vibrant, iconic Barbie aesthetic help reshape the sport’s “look” and boost confidence for a new generation of athletes?
For decades, hockey has had a very defined visual identity—one rooted in tradition, with equipment and apparel that has often felt uniform and reserved. This collaboration helps challenge these traditional narratives by broadening what the sport can look and feel like for the next generation of players.
By pairing CCM’s performance-driven engineering with Barbie’s bold, expressive aesthetic, we’re showing that elite equipment and apparel can also be a platform for individuality and self-expression, and I think this is especially meaningful for young female athletes. When players see gear that reflects their personality and feels empowering, it influences how they show up on the ice, ultimately building confidence and a stronger sense of belonging.
Representation like this reinforces that there isn’t just one way to “look” like a hockey player. You can bring your full self to the game, and this collection aims to show that that’s not only accepted, but it’s celebrated.
Now, young girls walking into a hockey store can more easily see themselves reflected in the sport, sparking that initial excitement and making them want to get on the ice.
Engineering for Inclusion: Marrouane Nabih mentioned that growing the game starts with literally reshaping gear for the female physiognomy. How does the JetSpeed FTW Pro elite stick in this collection balance that necessary high-level technical performance with the bold self-expression Barbie represents?
At CCM, performance is always the starting point. The JetSpeed FTW Pro stick is built on elite-level technology, but just as importantly, it’s engineered specifically for the female physiognomy—because even the most advanced equipment can’t deliver at its full potential if it doesn’t fit properly. This stick ensures women and girls have the performance, protection, and comfort that truly support how they play.
What makes this Barbie x CCM JetSpeed FTW Pro stick unique is how naturally performance and self-expression come together. The Barbie aesthetic is thoughtfully integrated into a product that meets the demands of elite play, so athletes never have to choose between how they perform and how they show up. The result is a stick that allows athletes to play at their best while expressing who they are with confidence.
Beyond the First Drop: The first phase of this collaboration includes sticks and apparel, with a second wave of equipment arriving in August 2026. How was the rollout of these specific items timed to maximize impact for both the global Barbie Dream Days™ celebration and the upcoming “Back to Hockey” season?
The timing was very intentional. Launching the first phase during the global Barbie Dream Days allows us to tap into a global cultural moment—one that celebrates possibility, creativity, and self-expression. Barbie has always encouraged the belief that girls can be and do anything, and this collaboration brings that message directly onto the ice.
We then carry that momentum directly into the “Back to Hockey” season, which is a critical moment in the participation cycle. That’s when families are making decisions about registration and assessing their equipment needs for the years ahead, when returning players are getting excited for their upcoming season, and when new athletes are stepping onto the ice for the first time.
By bridging these two moments, we’re not only driving awareness, but also meeting athletes and families at a key decision point and providing them with a solution. It allows us to convert that initial excitement into action, supporting both entry into the sport and long-term retention, which is ultimately how you grow the game in a meaningful way.
The “Stay in the Game” Mission: Statistics often show a drop-off in girls’ sports participation as they get older. How specifically do you believe this partnership encourages girls not just to enter the sport, but to feel a sense of belonging that inspires them to stay and thrive in it?
We know that while more girls are entering the sport than ever, retention remains a challenge, particularly as they get older. I think a big part of that comes down to whether they feel a genuine sense of belonging, especially as their priorities shift over time. They have to ask themselves “do I see a future for myself in hockey, or do I want to pursue something else?”
This partnership helps address that by making the game feel more inclusive and reflective of who they are. When girls can see themselves in the products available to them, in the storytelling, and in the broader culture of hockey, it reinforces that they truly have a place in the sport.
It’s about more than getting them onto the ice, but it’s about creating an environment where they feel confident, supported, and motivated to continue. When that sense of belonging is there, they’re far more likely to stay, develop, and thrive.
Cultural Representation on the Ice: Jennifer Gileno of Mattel Canada highlighted the goal of empowering athletes to celebrate their own style without compromising performance. What does it mean for the culture of the locker room to have an elite brand like Barbie officially welcomed into the CCM family?
Welcoming a brand like Barbie into the CCM family signals that there’s space in hockey for individuality and self-expression, without compromising elite performance. It reflects a meaningful shift in the culture of the game, and one that we hope to continue to see.
From my experience, locker rooms are where culture is built. When athletes feel comfortable expressing who they are, whether through their gear or their personal style, it fosters confidence and helps create a more inclusive, supportive environment.
This collaboration reinforces that performance and personal expression can coexist at the highest level, and that athletes don’t have to fit a single mold to belong in the game.
A New Generation of Role Models: With CCM already equipping stars in the PWHL and NHL, such as Sarah Nurse and Kendall Coyne Schofield, how do you see this collaboration further amplifying the message that “hockey is for everyone” to young fans watching their heroes?
Representation is incredibly powerful, and we see that every day through the amazing athletes we work with, who are already inspiring the next generation by showing them what’s possible.
We’re in an incredibly exciting time for women’s hockey. The PWHL has driven significant growth in visibility and fan engagement, and the recent 2026 Winter Olympics brought even more global attention to the sport. Together, that momentum is reinforcing the incredible talent, competitiveness, and overall excitement surrounding the women’s game and bringing these conversations to the forefront.
For young fans watching their heroes, it makes that connection even more tangible. This collaboration shows them that there’s no single way to be a hockey player—and that they can bring their own identity, style, and ambition into the sport. Like Barbie, they can dream big while staying true to who they are.
