What happens when two fitness-loving sisters-in-law turn a garage passion project into a full-blown wellness destination? You get Refine Fitness—a new boutique studio in West Vancouver that’s all about strength without pressure and progress without perfection. We caught up with founders Lara and Lindsey Volker to talk building community, balancing motherhood and business, and why feeling good comes first. —Noa Nichol
“Refine” is such a refreshing name—what does refining your fitness actually look like on a real-life, busy day (school drop-offs, work, everything)?
Refine is about adjusting yourself to your life—fine-tuning what you do little by little to make yourself better. We can be so hard on ourselves sometimes (especially physically), but we can also lack the consistent effort that’s needed. To us, Refine means making small, intentional adjustments to give yourself what you need to improve both your mental and physical well-being.
You’re both moms and entrepreneurs—be honest, what does your own workout routine really look like during a hectic week?
Working out is a priority for us. I treat my workout like a meeting with myself—I book it, and I don’t cancel it. It’s one of the first things I organize. When I feel good physically and mentally, everything else in life feels more manageable. Luckily, it’s also our job, so it fits in naturally. I truly need it to feel my best—it relieves stress, clears my mind, and prepares me for the day.
If someone walks into Refine feeling totally intimidated, what’s the first thing you do (or say) to make them feel instantly at ease?
Everyone is welcome—we all start somewhere. This space is for you, and only you. It’s not a competition, and there are no expectations—just an opportunity to do your best for yourself.
As for the mirrors, I can guarantee that everyone is focused on themselves, not anyone else. The only person watching you is the instructor, and that’s purely to support and guide you.
Your classes blend strength, Pilates, and yoga—what’s the magic of mixing these styles instead of sticking to just one?
Our classes don’t actually blend these styles all together—we offer them as distinct class types so clients can choose what suits their goals and energy that day:
- Re-Define: high reps with lighter weights
- Re-Claim: a heavier, strength-based class
- Re-Energize: weights combined with more cardio
- Re-Align: a Pilates-style class
- Re-Balance: a yoga class
What’s one fitness myth you’d love to retire—especially for women trying to get stronger or start something new?
I’d love to retire the myth that lifting weights makes women “bulky.” It’s outdated and simply not true. Strength training is essential for maintaining bone density and muscle strength as we age, helping us stay strong and resilient. It also supports fat loss and keeps our metabolism higher over time.
If you admire a strong, lean woman, ask her if she strength trains—I guarantee the answer will be yes.
For someone who’s fallen off their routine (we’ve all been there), what’s your go-to “just get back into it” advice?
It really can be that simple—just start. Find a friend, book a class together, and treat it like a work meeting you can’t cancel. Once you get two or three sessions in, you’ll start to rebuild that great feeling and momentum. It’s all about habit and consistency.
Also, acknowledge that you’ve taken a break and give yourself some grace in those first few classes back. Even for us, that first class after time off can feel tough—but your muscles remember. Before long, you’ll be back to feeling strong again. Just book the class and begin.
You’ve created classes for teens through to seniors—what’s something surprising you’ve learned from working with such a wide range of ages?
I’ve learned that no matter your age, your strength and ability can always improve—so don’t shy away from starting. Over time, people surprise themselves: reaching for heavier weights, holding a plank longer, or progressing from knees to toes in push-ups.
(Lindsey:) I always think of an 80-year-old client my mom trained who couldn’t reach the upper cabinets in her kitchen. After a year of training, she could hold a two-minute plank. That kind of progress is always possible.
Finish this sentence:
At Refine, success isn’t about how much you have, it’s about understanding that you don’t need more than what this moment gives you!

This content was written naturally and it actually kept my attention the whole time reading. I still enjoy Geometry Dash because the cube challenge and rhythm gameplay feel different compared to most browser games.
