Most steakhouses are content to serve a great steak. House of Dawn Steakhouse wants to teach you about it.

The Richmond dining destination is expanding its culinary repertoire this summer with two new experiences that prove there’s much more to the restaurant than expertly grilled beef—although there’s certainly plenty of that, too.

Led by Executive Chef and Culinary Director James Yang, House of Dawn has unveiled a luxurious Afternoon High Tea service alongside immersive Sunday Beef Masterclasses designed for serious steak lovers.

Let’s start with tea.

Available Wednesday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the new High Tea experience brings together premium Chinese tea culture and refined pastry craftsmanship in a way that feels both elegant and unexpected. Guests can choose from more than 15 premium Chinese teas sourced from renowned growing regions, including Spring-Picked Dragon Well Green Tea from Hangzhou, Anxi Tienguanyin Oolong from Fujian, Yunnan Red Rose Tea, and Wild Roselle Hibiscus from Yunnan.

The accompanying pastry selection, crafted by Pastry Chef Leo Liu, changes seasonally and includes an enticing mix of savoury and sweet bites. Think truffle egg tarts, smoked salmon puffs, Wagyu beef pies, yuzu tarts, strawberry choux, Earl Grey opera cake, macarons, chocolate bonbons, and more.

It’s the kind of afternoon indulgence that feels tailor-made for lingering conversations and long summer afternoons.

For those who prefer their culinary education with a side of marbling charts and world-class steaks, House of Dawn’s new Sunday Beef Masterclasses offer something truly unique.

Hosted personally by Yang, the intimate experiences invite guests to explore premium beef programs from around the globe through guided tastings, comparative flights, and insider knowledge gleaned from the chef’s impressive résumé, which includes time at culinary icons such as Noma in Copenhagen, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon in Shanghai, and New York’s legendary Peter Luger Steakhouse.

Participants will sample exceptional cuts from Canada, the United States, Australia, and Japan while learning about grading systems, feeding programs, terroir, marbling, flavour profiles, and the nuances that distinguish one steak from another.

“Our Beef Masterclass combines culinary education, luxury dining and premium steak tasting into a one-of-a-kind experience,” says Yang. “Guests will dive deep into the world of premium beef and discover the beauty and breadth of products we feature from different regions around the world.”

It’s a natural extension of a restaurant that already treats steak as something of an art form.

At House of Dawn, every cut is carefully sourced, French-trimmed, aged for a minimum of 30 days, and cooked over Binchotan charcoal before being finished in a Montague grill to achieve a perfectly crisp crust and juicy centre. The result is a steak program that has quickly earned a devoted following since the restaurant opened in 2025.

Of course, summer dining isn’t just about what’s on the plate—it’s about creating memorable experiences around it.

Whether that’s sipping rare tea and nibbling pastries in the afternoon or comparing Japanese Wagyu to Australian Angus over a guided tasting, House of Dawn is giving diners a few more reasons to make the trip to Richmond this season.

And for food lovers, that’s always worth raising a glass—or a teacup—to. —Noa Nichol
